There’s something F.I.S.H.y at St. Pius X School. This year our theme is F.I.S.H. You can see F.I.S.H. everywhere in the school. What does it all mean? We are finding out about the Friends of Jesus, the Images of Jesus, the Sayings of Jesus, and the Healing Hands of Jesus.
Who are the Friends of Jesus? If we look in the Bible we find Jesus is friends with fishermen and tax collectors; mothers and fathers; brothers and sisters; the rich and the poor; the sick and the sinners. He accepted everyone for who they were and what talent they brought to the group. All he asked was that they believe in God and love their neighbor as themselves. What does this mean to us? It means that no matter who we are and what particular talent we possess, if we believe in God and show love and respect to our neighbor, then we are living out the call to be a follower of Jesus.
What are the images of Jesus? Jesus has many images. Images are not only how a person looks but images are what a person is inside as well. Jesus was a carpenter, the son of Mary, the son of God, a friend to the Apostles, a teacher and a shepherd. In the New Testament he is also called the Light of the World and the Lamb of God. All of these images tell us something about what God wants us to be. As followers of Jesus we are called to see Christ in each other. We are asked to be the image of Jesus. We are also asked to see Christ in others. This will allow us to treat ourselves and others with dignity and respect.
What did Jesus say? In the Gospels we find the sayings of Jesus. He was a master storyteller and teacher. Throughout his parables, Jesus teaches us how to treat others. His stories tell us about forgiveness, understanding, kindness and peaceful living. He taught us how to love. The powerful message in the Sermon on the Mount (Beatitudes) is the blueprint for living a faith-filled life. He also taught how to pray the perfect prayer – The Our Father.
How did Jesus Heal? The healing hands of Jesus are seen in action in the Gospels as well. From the physical healing of the blind, the lame and the lepers to the spiritual healing of those with unclean spirits and demons, Jesus shows us the way to live and work together. It is our duty to help those in need no matter how difficult or impossible it may seem. He even raised Lazarus from the dead. Nothing is impossible with God. He would like for us to heal each other with forgiveness and acts of service.
At St. Pius X School we strive to answer the call to follow Jesus. Our teachers' mission is to teach as Jesus did. Jesus, the master teacher calls each of us – teachers, students, parents, and parishioners – to be the Friends of Jesus, the image of Jesus, the voice of Jesus and the healing hands of Jesus. We ask God to guide us along this path as we continue our school year.
